Ingredients for 4th of July Cookies

  • All Purpose Flour
  • Baking Soda – This helps the cookies rise and spread. It also adds additional salty flavor.
  • Salt – A pinch of salt balances the sweetness in baked goods and makes them taste better.
  • Softened Butter – Room temperature, softened, unsalted butter is best because this recipe contains salt.
  • Granulated White Sugar
  • Light Brown Sugar – Brown sugar has a rich molasses flavor that stands out in chocolate chip cookies. If you don’t have light brown sugar, dark brown sugar is a great alternative.
  • Vanilla – A splash of vanilla extract in the dough enriches the flavor of the cookies.
  • Eggs – In cookies, eggs help hold the cookie dough together. An egg helps prevent the cookies from being too dry and crumbly.
  • Gel Food Coloring – Dye the cookie dough using red and blue food coloring. This gives the cookie itself a festive appearance in addition to the M&M’s. Use gel food coloring to prevent the dough from thinning.
  • Mini Chocolate Chips – Mini chips are great for cookies because it ensures there’s a little bit of chocolate in every bite. Use regular chocolate chips if you prefer.
  • Red, White, and Blue Mix M&M’s – These fun patriotic colored candies are the perfect ingredient for these festive cookies. They add color and taste delicious!

How to Make the Best 4th of July Cookies

These are the best chewy cookies for your 4th of July desserts table! They are so much fun thanks to the fun colors and candy toppings. For these cookies, I followed the Nestle Toll House classic chocolate chip cookie recipe. It is my go-to for chocolate chip cookies, so why mess with a good thing?

Step One – First, preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. A slightly hotter oven helps the cookies achieve a chewy center.

Step Two – Next, combine room-temperature butter, granulated sugar, light brown sugar, and vanilla in a large bowl. Use an electric hand mixer or stand mixer to cream the sugar and butter together until they reach a smooth consistency.

Step Three – Then stir the eggs into the creamed butter and sugar. Stir by hand until well combined.

Step Four – Next, combine the flour, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl. Add these dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. Mix by hand, or with a mixer, until the flour is well incorporated.

Create Patriotic Dough

Step Five – Separate the dough into three equal sections. Place the dough in three different bowls. Add red food coloring to one bowl and blue food coloring to the other bowl. Mix the dough until it reaches the desired shades of red and blue.
