Ingredients for a Strawberry Lemon Drop Martini

  • Vodka – Vodka is a popular spirit for cocktails because it has a smooth finish, without a strong flavor. It adds a bit more alcohol without changing the flavor of the drink. This allows the citrus of the lemon and the flavor of the strawberries to shine through in the martini. Use your favorite vodka for this cocktail, or use lemon vodka and skip the lemon juice. My favorite is Cirrus Vodka made locally in Richmond, VA.
  • Triple Sec – This orange liqueur enhances the fruit flavor of the martini. It is slightly sweet and made from oranges. Substitute triple sec for Cointreau, Grand Marnier, or any other orange liqueur you have on hand.
  • Lemon Juice – Add brightness and acidity to this sweet cocktail with fresh lemon juice. It cuts the sweetness just enough. Fresh lemons are best, but bottled lemon juice also works well.
  • Strawberry Syrup – Though this cocktail recipe uses fresh strawberries, the addition of strawberry syrup adds more strawberry flavor. It also sweetens the martini. Purchase strawberry syrup or make homemade strawberry syrup.
  • Fresh Strawberries – The key ingredient to a strawberry cocktail is fresh muddled strawberries. Wash fresh strawberries in water and baking soda to clean off any remaining dirt or debris. Thawed frozen strawberries are also a great alternative.

Homemade Strawberry Simple Syrup

Simple syrup is one of the best ingredients for adding sweetness to a cocktail. If you can stir, then you can make strawberry simple syrup!

  • Add 1 cup of water, 1 cup of strawberries, and 1 cup of sugar to a small saucepan.
  • Heat the saucepan on medium-low heat. It does not need to boil!
  • Continuously stir the water-sugar mixture until all of the sugar dissolves and the strawberries turn mushy.
  • Pour into a glass jar.
  • Allow the syrup to cool in the refrigerator. It should last up to 6 months in the refrigerator!

How to Make a Strawberry Lemon Drop Martini

This delicious spin on a classic Lemon Drop Martini is simple to make, but it is sure to be one of your new favorite cocktails.

Step 1 – Add half a cup of juicy strawberry pieces and lemon juice to the bottom of a cocktail shaker. Use a muddler to smash (aka muddle) the fruit.

Step 2 – Add vodka, triple sec, and strawberry syrup to the strawberry puree.

Step 3 – Add a handful of ice cubes to the shaker. Then firmly place the lid on the cocktail shaker. Shake for 30 seconds to combine the cocktail ingredients and chill them.

Step 4 – Use a mesh strainer to strain the cocktail into a chilled martini glass.

Step 5 – Garnish the cocktail with fresh strawberries and a slice of lemon.

What Type of Glass Do I Use?

  • Martini glass – Martini glasses have a large bowl. This allows the cocktail to “breathe.” A cocktail breathing means that the alcohol is dispersed more evenly in the cocktail. A proper martini glass has a long stem. The stem is important because it allows the martini to stay cold. It would warm quickly if you touched the glass since it doesn’t contain ice.
  • Coupe glass – Coupe glasses are similar to martini glasses. They have a large mouth and a stem. The large mouth of the glass allows you to take in the scents of the cocktail as you drink. Smelling a cocktail as you drink it changes the flavor profile.
