What is Sangria?

Sangria is a cocktail that combines white or red wine, liquor, fresh fruit, and spices. The type of wine used in the sangria recipes dictates the flavor profile. Red wine pairs well with dark berries and liquors. It also compliments holiday spices, like cinnamon or cloves. White wine has a lighter flavor and pairs well with citrus.

This Pina Colada Sangria combines white wine with pineapple and coconut flavors to create a tropical summer sangria. This sangria recipe uses coconut rum for the coconut flavor and pineapple juice.

Ingredients for Piรฑa Colada Sangria

  • Frozen Pineapple – Fresh fruit is most popular for sangria, but I love using frozen fruit. It chills the cocktail without watering it down with ice and releases more flavor as the sangria sets. Drained canned chopped pineapple also works.
  • Pineapple Juice – The best way to add a punch of pineapple to any cocktail or recipe is with pineapple juice. I keep the mini cans of Dole pineapple juice in the pantry so I always have it on hand.
  • Coconut Rum – Sangria usually has an added liqueur or spirit. This recipe contains coconut rum for the signature pina colada coconut flavor.
  • White Wine – A slightly sweet white wine, like Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc, is best for this tropical sangria. The sweetness pairs well with the acidity of the pineapple and citrus without making the drink overly sweet. A less oaky Chardonnay could also work but isn’t ideal.
  • Lemon Juice – Despite the acidity of the pineapple, this white wine sangria needs a little fresh lemon juice to brighten the flavors. It balances the pineapple and coconut beautifully.

How to Make Pina Colada Sangria

This simple white sangria recipe is the perfect drink to enjoy poolside, on the beach, or at a backyard barbeque! It’s ready in five easy steps and can be prepared in advance.

Step One – First, dump a couple of cups of frozen pineapple into a large pitcher. Or cut up a fresh pineapple and use that instead.

Step Two – Next, pour pineapple juice, coconut rum, and white wine over the pineapple. Add a little freshly squeezed lemon juice as well.

Step Three – Stir to combine the ingredients and flavors. I recommend letting the sangria sit in the refrigerator for at least an hour before serving. This resting time gives the fruit and coconut rum time to permeate the sangria. Serving sangria the next day is even better because it gives the flavors time to meld together more.

Serve Pina Colada sangria over ice in a large wine glass with shredded coconut along the rim. Garnish with a wedge of fresh pineapple, pineapple leaves, and Maraschino cherries.

How Long Does This Sangria Last in the Refrigerator?

Sangria typically lasts up to five days open in the refrigerator. Store it in a pitcher or carafe with a sealed lid to maintain its freshness. The flavors of the sangria deepen and develop over time. This means the flavor may change the next time you drink it. In my opinion, next-day sangria is always best!
