Modern Masters Metallic Paint Breakfast Tray Makeover

Upcycle outdated home decor with Modern Masters Metallic paint! This boring breakfast tray is now the perfect home accessory.

Thrift stores and yard sales are full of excellent home decor finds. Many of them are perfect for displaying immediately too. But sometimes, the really great finds are the ones that need a little TLC. They may be in need of repair or simply a coat of paint. Modern Masters Metallic Paint is a fantastic product for giving new life to outdated home decorations.

Making Over A Breakfast Tray with Modern Masters Metallics

Trays are one of my favorite home accessories. They serve so many different purposes! Small trays are perfect for corralling items in a bathroom or home office. Larger trays serve as the base for a styled coffee table or kitchen island. And of course, a tray always comes in handy for serving snacks! I purchased a large, black mirrored tray at a yard sale. While the size and shape of the tray were perfect for my home, I did not like the color. Since the tray only cost $2, I thought it was worth it to give it a little makeover!

I decided to use Modern Masters Metallic paint on the tray. I’ve used this product on other decor projects in the past. For my DIY chalkboard ornaments, I used the Pale Gold metallic paint. The paint has a beautiful metallic sheen and excellent coverage. Actually, I almost used the gold again for the tray. But ultimately I went with Silver.

To prep the tray for painting, I cleaned it with soap and water. Once the tray was dry, I cleaned it again using rubbing alcohol. Rubbing alcohol removes any remaining grease or residue. With materials like plastic, or glass, sanding isn’t an option. So the surface needs to be as clean as possible for the paint to adhere properly. After wiping down the surface with rubbing alcohol, let it dry completely before painting.

If I had chosen the gold paint, then I would have primed the tray. Instead, I only applied a single coat of Silver. I applied the paint using a foam craft brush. The finish was semi-opaque after one coat. So the black peeks through just a little bit. The brush also left a bit of texture, so the tray looks like it has a grain. I love the finish! It makes the tray look more high quality than just plastic.

After painting the outside of the tray I painted a frame on the mirror around the perimeter of the tray. There were two reasons for this. The first was that the black of the tray around the perimeter of the mirror was reflecting out. So the tray looked unfinished. Also, it elevates the look of the tray.

It only took one coat of paint for the coverage I wanted on both the frame and the mirror. This is something I love about Modern Masters paint, the coverage is awesome! I’ve used their paint several times before, like when I redid my front door. The Metallic line has over 100 different colors and shades to choose from.

I love having this tray serve as a base when styling my home decor. It also has a lot of practical use, like carrying desserts and drinks to the couch for movie night.
