2021 was the year of Marvel for me. I’ve been a fan of Marvel for several years, but this year I jumped all in. I watched all of the movies from Phases 1 – 3 in January. My social media algorithms picked up on my new hobby and I started seeing behind-the-scenes clips, bloopers, and cast interviews everywhere. And then, of course, new content came flooding onto Disney Plus. And new movies are dropping each month in theaters. I’ve become a total fangirl. So, in light of my new obsession, I decided to make a Marvel Christmas tree for my mom cave.

I’m very proud to say that I created most of the ornaments for my Marvel Christmas tree myself! They are vinyl decals attached to shatterproof ornaments. I collected the symbols for all of my favorite characters. Then I cut them out on vinyl using my Cricut Joy. This was my first time using my Cricut, so the decals are not perfect. But I’m still very happy with how they turned out.

Choosing Characters for My Marvel Christmas Tree

I chose all of my favorite Marvel characters to feature on my tree. Then, I bought or made ornaments accordingly. The characters I chose to feature are:

  • Captain America (Steve Rogers)
  • Captain America (Sam Wilson)
  • Winter Soldier (Bucky)
  • Captain Marvel
  • Scarlet Witch
  • Black Widow
  • Black Panther
  • Iron Man
  • Spider-Man
  • Thor
  • Loki
  • Hulk
  • Hawkeye
  • Avengers Logo

I needed different colored ornaments and vinyl for each character. For example, I needed green ornaments for both Loki and Hulk. Iron Man, Spider-Man, Captain Marvel, and Thor could all have red backgrounds. While black worked best for Black Widow. I bought a box of 50 shatterproof ornaments in red, green, white, and black from Target. Some of the ornaments were textured with glitter. This isn’t a great surface for applying vinyl so I used those ornaments for filler. They add a little sparkle to the tree! I also had several ornaments in varying shades of gray already that I used.

Several characters, like both Captain Americas, Black Panther, and Hawkeye, needed ornament colors that I did not have on hand. For those ornaments, I created my own glitter ornaments in blue, purple, and gold. For my glitter ornaments, I use Mop & Glo as my adhesive inside the ornament. Creating the Marvel Ornaments

Once I chose all of my characters I paired character logos and ornament colors together.

  • Captain Americas – Red and white vinyl on a blue ornament.
  • Winter Soldier – Red vinyl on a blue ornament.
  • Captain Marvel – Gold vinyl on a red ornament.
  • Scarlet Witch – Red vinyl on a gray or gold ornament.
  • Black Widow – Red vinyl on a black ornament.
  • Black Panther – Black vinyl on a purple ornament.
  • Iron Man – Gold vinyl on a red ornament.
  • Spider-Man – I chose a glittery silver vinyl on a red ornament. This was just a fun choice.
  • Thor – Silver vinyl on a red ornament.
  • Loki – Gold vinyl on a green ornament.
  • Hulk – Black vinyl on a green ornament.
  • Hawkeye – Black vinyl on a purple ornament.
  • Avengers Logo – I chose silver vinyl on any color ornament.

Once I had a list of everything I needed, I designed my character logos in batches of the same color. For example, I printed the Winter Soldier, Black Widow, and Scarlet Witch designs on red vinyl at the same time.

My DIY Captain America Tree Topper

I had to have Captain America’s shield for my Marvel Christmas tree topper. Originally, I planned to buy a toy shield. But I couldn’t find any that were the right size. Instead, I made my own shield using a white frisbee. I painted the center of the frisbee blue. I also painted the outer rim and around the blue center red. Then I printed a glittery vinyl star for the center of the shield. I’m really happy with how the shield turned out. It’s the perfect size for this tree! I beefed up the shield a bit by adding some glittery gold stems to either side. The stems add some sparkle and pizzaz!

I really love how this Marvel Christmas tree came together! It makes me so happy to have it in my mom cave with my Black Widow print.
