That’s right, like many other bloggers out there I went and popped some tags this week to participate in the (Completely Unofficial) Macklemore Thrift Shop Challenge, created by the folks at Young House Love. If you have no idea what I’m talking about Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are rappers and they have a song about thrifting, awesome right? They actually play the song on the radio here in Richmond, and the first time I heard it I was like “Wow, this is the stupidest song ever.” Now, it’s my jams. Never heard the song? You’re welcome.
THRIFT SHOP (PG Radio Edit Clean version) – MACKLEMORE & RYAN LEWIS FEAT. WANZ from Garrett Wesley Gibbons on Vimeo.
The point of the challenge is to go to your local thrift shop with only “$20 in [your] pocket” and find some awesome stuff, plus a few extras from the song. When I went I only had $10 in my pocket, so I just went with that. This is my game face.My local Good Will was PACKED when I went on my lunch break on Tuesday. There were so many people, so I tried to be really covert in my photo snapping. You don’t want people at the thrift store to think you’re weird. Due to the large amounts of people, and my time limit of 30 minutes the pickings were slim (and overpriced) but I did manage to find a “broken keyboard.”
There was also this big a$$ fur coat. So stylish.
But I went to the thrift store on a mission, buy something I actually want/need. I recently ordered some prints on Etsy for a Valentine’s gift for me and the hubs (you’ll have to wait to see them since Jesse reads this sometimes) and they needed frames. These 2 were $2.50 each. I’m thinking I’ll either spray paint them black or maybe Rub ‘N Buff them.
And the shirt underneath the frames? Well I’m proud to say that it was my first ever thrift shop clothing purchase. I plan on washing it about 15 times, but I think it’s pretty cute and was only $4.
Three things for $10 = not bad in my book. I’m sure some of you more skilled thrifters could get a better deal, but this is something to be proud of for me.
Did anyone else participate in the Thrift Shop Challenge? What’d you get for you $20? Something hella tight?
Congrats on your first clothing purchase! I always find the cutest vintage dresses at the Goodwill Outlet, but they’re always too small for me so I give them to my size 6 friend. Blah. All the guys at the thrift shop I went to for the challenge kept asking if I needed any help. This is probably because I kept meandering around and taking photos with my phone.
Hahahaha, that is one big a$$ coat … and congrats on the shirt purchase, it is cute!!
What a cute shirt! I love the stripes!
And I can’t wait to see what you do with the frames!
You so should have bought that big a$$ coat! ๐
I wish I would have seen this challenge sooner; I definitely would have done it too! Great purchases. I made my first second hand clothing purchase when I had to buy lots of maternity clothes. After you wash them a few times you are good to go!!
Haha! I wish I had of ๐ We could’ve went together! Great finds…that is a really cute top!

I vote for the coat. Please tell me you secretly bought that too!?
That coat would have made some awesome pillows
Great finds! Can’t wait to see these Etsy prints!
I think it’s funny that you were worried what the people at the thrift store thought about you taking pictures. Believe me that was the most normal thing they could have seen all day! Heeehhee I buy clothing all the time at Goodwill and have scored the Best stuff!!
Can’t wait to see the prints…but I reallyyy wish you rocked that fur coat for a picture or two haha.
I have no shame when it comes to taking photos at thrift stores. ๐ Sweet finds!!
There’s this woman that I work with who is a pretty stylish dresser. Recently I complimented her on an outfit she wore and she proudly remarked, “Goodwill!”. She said she does ALL her shopping at thrift stores. I NEVER would have guessed!
