Impress your guests at your next summer barbecue with this tropical twist on a classic margarita!
Ingredients for a Guava Margarita
- Tequila – Silver tequila, also called tequila blanco, is the best tequila for this cocktail. Silver tequila has a stronger, clearer taste than gold tequila. It is better for a fruity margarita because it doesn’t mask the subtle sweetness of the guava I always have a bottle of Jose Cuervo in my liquor cabinet for margaritas.
- Yuzu Liqueur – Yuzu is a small yellow citrus fruit that’s popular in Asian cuisine. Its flavor is best described as a combination of lemon and grapefruit. The unique flavor of Yuzu is the perfect complement to tropical guava, so I used it in place of the stand orange liqueur in most margaritas. If you don’t have yuzu liqueur, substitute triple sec or Cointreau.
- Lime Juice – No margarita is complete without a bit of fresh lime juice. It adds a distinct margarita flavor and an additional bright, citrus punch to the drink.
- Guava Nectar – Nectar is a combination of fruit juice, pulp, water, and juice. It’s sweeter than regular guava juice, so it eliminates the need for simple syrup in this cocktail. Guava nectar is also more widely available at normal grocery stores. Purchase canned guava nectar in the International foods aisle of your local grocery store.
- Fresh Guava – If you can find fresh guavas, then muddle a bit into your margarita. Or use it as a garnish!

How to Make a Guava Margarita
This delicious Guava Margarita is the perfect refreshing summer cocktail. It’s a simple combination of fruit juices and tangy flavor.

Step 4 – Strain the cocktail into a margarita glass or a cocktail glass with a salt rim over ice.
Garnish the “Guavarita” with wheels of fresh guava and a lime slice.

*Make this a Spicy Guava Margarita with a few slices of fresh jalapeno in the cocktail shaker. The fruity notes balance the spice well.*
How to Salt Rim a Glass
Many margaritas have a salted rim. Adding salt to the rim of a margarita glass enhances the flavor of a good margarita. It also adds a fun and beautiful touch to the drink.
First, run a lime wedge along the rim of the glass. This creates a wet and sticky surface for the salt to stick to.
Next, flip the glass upside down and place the edge of the glass in a shallow bowl of margarita salt or kosher salt. Margarita salt is a coarse salt made of bigger salt flakes. So they are more visible. It also has a better flavor. If you make a lot of margaritas, consider buying a salt rimmer.
Spice up the rim of your glass by using a pasilla chile seasoning, like Tajin, on your rim as well.

What Type of Glass Do I Use?
- Margarita glass – Margarita glasses have a stem and a wide mouth. The stem allows you to hold the cocktail without it melting from the warmth of your hands. They are ideal for frozen margaritas.
- Short tumbler – Not everyone has a set of margarita glasses at home. A short tumbler, or rocks glass, is also great for a margarita on the rocks. I prefer my margaritas over ice with a straw!
Can I Make These Guava Margaritas In a Big Batch?
Margaritas are the perfect big-batch cocktail and you can make them in advance! Multiply the ingredients by the number of guests you wish to serve. Then mix all the ingredients, without ice, in a large pitcher. Keep the pitcher in the refrigerator until it’s time to serve drinks. Then guests may serve themselves from the pitcher.
You may store this cocktail in the refrigerator for up to a week. However, the flavor profile will change the longer you store it!
