Ingredients for a Frozen Passion Fruit Margarita

  • Tequila – Silver tequila, also called blanco tequila, is the best tequila for this cocktail. Silver tequila has a stronger, clearer taste than gold tequila. It is better for a frozen tropical margarita because it doesn’t alter the flavor of the passion fruit. I always have a bottle of Jose Cuervo in my liquor cabinet for margaritas.
  • Passion Fruit Liqueur – This recipe differs from a classic margarita because it uses passion fruit liqueur instead of orange liqueurs like triple sec and Grand Marnier. It adds more passion fruit flavor and a touch of sweetness. This liqueur adds a little sweetness, so you can skip adding sugar syrup, agave nectar, or passion fruit syrup. My favorite brand of passion fruit liqueur is Marie Brizard
  • Lime Juice – No margarita is complete without fresh lime juice. It adds a distinct margarita flavor and a bit of bright, citrus to the drink. Squeeze a lime using a citrus juicer or press.
  • Frozen Passion Fruit – Get all the tangy and tropical passion fruit flavors from frozen passion fruit. Using frozen fruit instead of passion fruit juice or passion fruit puree eliminates the need for a lot of ice, which waters down the cocktail. If you can’t find frozen passion fruit, try freezing passion fruit nectar in ice cube trays instead. Fresh passionfruit may be hard to find at your local grocery store (I can’t find it anywhere close to my town!) so frozen or bottled options are more accessible.
  • Ice – Make these frozen margaritas a little thicker with a handful of ice.

How to Make a Frozen Passion Fruit Margarita

This delicious passion fruit margarita recipe is the perfect tropical twist on a classic cocktail. It’s simple but has a unique flavor that’s perfect for summer.

Step One – Add tequila, passion fruit liqueur, lime juice, and frozen passion fruit to a blender.

Step Two – Add a handful of ice cubes to the blender. Then firmly place the lid on the blender. Blend until the cocktail reaches the consistency of a slushie. Add more ice as needed.

Step Three – Pour the frozen margarita into a glass with a Tajin rim and enjoy!

Step Four – Garnish with a pineapple leaf or a lime wheel. Fresh passion fruits make an excellent garnish as well if you can find them.

*Optional* – If you prefer a spicy passion fruit margarita add a few jalapeño slices to your cocktail. The jalapeño pepper adds a little bit of spiciness but doesn’t overpower the flavor.

What Type of Glass Do I Use?

  • Margarita glass – Margarita glasses are ideal for frozen margaritas. They have a stem and a wide mouth. The stem allows you to hold the cocktail without melting it with the warmth of your hands.
  • Short tumbler – Not everyone has a set of margarita glasses at home. So a short tumbler, or rocks glass, is also great for a frozen margarita.

How to Rim a Glass with Tajín

Many margaritas are served in salt-rimmed cocktail glasses. Adding salt to the rim of a margarita glass enhances the flavor of a good margarita. It also adds a fun and beautiful touch to the drink. This cocktail uses a Tajin seasoning rim instead. Tajín is a Mexican spice mix made with lime, chili peppers, and salt. Tajin rims are ideal for sweet, tropical margaritas.

First, run a lime wedge along the rim of the glass. This creates a wet and sticky surface for the salt and Tajin to stick to.

Next, flip the glass upside down and place it in a small plate of margarita salt or Tajin. Margarita salt is a coarse salt made of bigger salt flakes. So they are more visible. It also has a better flavor.

Another option is to add Tajin to a smaller area of the class. Rub a wedge of lime on a quarter of the glass, then roll that section of the glass in the Tajin. This method looks gorgeous but also means you control whether or not you get Tajín in each sip.

Can I Make These Frozen Margaritas In a Big Batch?

Margaritas are the perfect big-batch cocktail and you can make them in advance! Multiply the ingredients by the number of guests you wish to serve. Then mix all the ingredients in a large blender. Transfer the frozen margaritas to a large pitcher or serve them directly from the blender!

These frozen Passion Fruit Margaritas are the perfect taste of the tropics from your backyard. They are a great cocktail for pool parties or simply eating chicken tacos at home!
