This new lightsaber-themed treat will surely be a big hit with young and old Star Wars fans. Enjoy them on May the Fourth, for a Star Wars party, or during a Star Wars movie marathon.

What is a Lightsaber?

A lightsaber is a luminescent laser sword used by the Force-wielding Jedi and Sith in the Star Wars Universe. The lightsabers can cut through most materials and are featured in almost every Star Wars movie. The most common colors for lightsabers are green, blue, and red. Jedi like Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi are known for their green and blue lightsabers. While Sith, like Darth Vader, uses red lightsabers.

Pretzel lightsabers are a popular treat to make at home for Star Wars-themed parties. However, sometimes during May, you can find these candy-coated pretzels in Disney theme parks, like Disneyland and Disney World.

Ingredients for Lightsaber Pretzels

  • Pretzel Rods – These pretzels are thicker and longer than pretzel sticks. They are about 10 inches long. This makes them perfect for decorating because you can decorate several inches of pretzel, but still hold the snack by the undecorated end.
  • Candy Melts – These candies are colorful, and sometimes flavored, disks made from sugar and oil. When melted they are great for dipping cookies or other snacks into. They harden into a sweet and colorful candy coating. For lightsabers, you need red, blue, and green candy melts.

How to Make Lightsaber Pretzels

Create your own Lightsaber Pretzel Rods in just a few minutes! They are a simple and delicious treat for any Light Side or Dark Side Force wielder.

Step One – Melt the candy melts in the microwave or using a double boiler on the stove according to the package directions. Heat the candy slowly and stir often so it doesn’t seize. Seized candy melts turn grainy and hard. They are impossible to work with and you will need to start over if they seize.

How to Melt Candy Melts

  • Microwave: Heat the candy melts in 30-second increments in a microwave-safe bowl. Stir every 30 seconds to ensure the candy melts evenly and doesn’t seize.
  • Stove: Pour 1 cup of water into a medium saucepan and bring the water to a simmer. The water does not need to boil. Then, reduce the heat and place a double boiler, or a glass heatproof bowl into the pan. The bottom of the bowl should not touch the water. Pour the candy melts into the bowl and stir frequently as the candy melts into a liquid.

Step Two – Once the colored candy melts into a smooth liquid remove them from the heat. Pour candy into tall glasses. A regular glass drinking tumbler works well.

Step Three – Dip pretzel rods into the colorful melted candy. Two-thirds of the pretzel rod should be covered.

Step Four – Place the pretzel rod on a sheet of parchment or wax paper on a cookie sheet or cooling rack and let the candy on the dipped pretzel set. Once the pretzel sets and the candy is hard, add a line of black gel icing at the end of the colorful section.

Remove each finished lightsaber from the parchment paper and serve to your little Force users.

Lightsaber Pretzels FAQs

What If I Can’t Find the Candy Melt Colors I Need?

If you can’t find colorful candy melts, then use white candy melts or white almond bark instead. Once the candy melts, add several drops of gel food coloring until you achieve your desired color.

Can I Add a Handle?

If you want your lightsaber to have a handle, dip the pretzel’s uncovered end into melted black candy melts. Allow the candy to harden. Then use a piping bag to pipe black icing around the area where the colorful sword and black handle meet. Add a red mini M&M to act as the switch. I don’t like doing this because the black candy of the handle melts all over your hands. It’s quite messy.

Don’t the Disney Lightsabers Have Sprinkles?

They do! The colorful sword portion of the pretzels from Galaxy’s Edge at Disney is covered in matching sugar sprinkles. If you’d like to do this, then go for it. I find the sprinkles a little overwhelmingly sweet.

How to Store Pretzel Lightsabers

Store these fun Star Wars snacks in an airtight container or a freezer bag at room temperature. If stored properly, this snack will last for 5-7 days.

These fun Lightsaber Pretzels are the perfect snack for any Star Wars birthday party, baby shower, or movie marathon. They are simple to make and fun to eat.
