Wooden block calendars are a stylish and fun way to keep track of the date. They easily fit on desks, shelves, or countertops. But, if you’re like me, you don’t always remember to change the date. I don’t often work at my desk for long periods of time. So when I have a quick minute to get a little work done, changing the date on my calendar isn’t on my priority list. And when I finally do look at the calendar, it’s been days or weeks since I changed it. So I decided to convert my wooden block perpetual calendar from Decocrated into a DIY daily quote calendar.

A quote calendar focuses on changing the calendar to read different motivational statements, rather than the date. Now, I can change out the calendar whenever I need a little motivation. But I won’t cringe when the date reads two months ago. It’s a really fun spin on a desktop calendar.

This was an incredibly simple project. I used a block calendar I already owned, a little bit of spray paint, and my Cricut Joy. The Cricut allowed me to cut out my new quotes on vinyl and attach them to the blocks.

Create a DIY Motivational Quote Calendar

Start with a simple block perpetual calendar. My calendar is from Decocrated, but Amazon and Walmart offer similar ones. I like the wood finish of the calendar holder with the white blocks. So I decided to paint my blocks solid white. I used white acrylic craft paint and gave each block several coats to cover the existing writing. Once the paint was dry, I cut out my motivational quotes on black vinyl using the Cricut Joy.

Finding the Perfect Quotes and Sayings

The most difficult part of this project was deciding on quotes for the blocks. I wanted the phrases or words on the blocks to be interchangeable. And I didn’t want the phrases too small. Ultimately, I decided on these 24 words and phrases:

  • Drink Coffee
  • Messy Bun
  • Be Kind
  • Set Goals
  • Hustle
  • Deep Breaths
  • Get Shit Done
  • Be Creative
  • Follow Your Dreams
  • Keep Trying
  • You’ve Got This
  • Be You
  • “I can do this all day” – Captain America
  • “Today is a good day”
  • “Don’t just fly, soar” – Dumbo
  • “Change Your Mindset”
  • “You are Enough”
  • “Know Your Worth”
  • “You are Magic”
  • “Sieze the Day”
  • “Everyday I’m Hustling”
  • “Take a Walk”
  • “Whatever it takes” – Avengers
  • “Imagination has no end” – Disney

If you know me, then you know I couldn’t resist a few Marvel and Disney quotes!

Designing the Quotes Using Cricut Design Space

Open Cricut Design Space and type out each of the quotes or phrases. I wanted the quotes to be interchangeable, so I limited the fonts to two. I used a combination of Cricut Sans and Freestyle Script for my quote fonts. You can’t go wrong with a standard font and an easy-to-read script!

I measured each calendar block to determine what size the quotes I needed. The square blocks were 2 inches by 2 inches, so the block phrases are 2″ wide and 2″ tall. Some are less than that due to the size of the words.

The rectangular blocks for the phrases were 1″ tall and 4″ wide. So all the quotes are less than 1″ tall and 4″ long.

Cutting the Quotes on Vinyl

Once all of the quotes are designed and properly sized, it’s time to cut them out! Click the “Make It” button in the top right corner of Cricut Design Space. The Cricut Joy requires that you select a loading method for the vinyl. Depending on the type of vinyl you’re using, determines if you need to cut on a mat or not. For Smart Vinyl, you don’t need a mat with the Cricut Joy. For regular vinyl, you need to select “On Mat.”

After you select the load method, click “Done” then continue. The Cricut Joy loads the vinyl, then you click “Go.” Watch in wonder as the Cricut Joy cuts out all of your motivational quotes!

Weeding the Vinyl

Once the quotes are cut on the vinyl, use the Cricut Weeder to remove all of the excess vinyl. That way you’re only left with your pretty quotes!

Using Cricut Transfer Tape

Use Cricut Transfer Tape to transfer the vinyl quotes to the calendar blocks. Simply cut the Transfer Tape to the appropriate size for the quotes. Then peel the backing off the tape. Lay it over the vinyl and use the Scraper tool to rub over the vinyl. This ensures that all of the vinyl sticks to the transfer tape.

Attach the Vinyl to the Calendar Blocks

Stick the Transfer Tape, with attached vinyl, to the calendar blocks. Use the scraper tool again to rub over the tape. This ensures that the vinyl sticks to the calendar blocks instead of staying attached to the tape. The Transfer tape has a grid pattern to ensure that the quotes are attached level.
