December 2019 Favorites

Hello! I hope everyone had a fantastic holiday! It’s been wonderful having Jesse home and spending time together as a family. I’ve also spent a lot of time thinking about the new year and start of a new decade. It’s crazy to think back on what I was doing 10 years ago and how vastly different my life is now, and how different it’s going to be in another 10! Anyway, here’s a few of my December 2019 Favorites!

A few months ago I went to a beauty event at Sephora with some fellow bloggers. They had people from various makeup and skincare brands there doing make up and teaching techniques. I got my brows done and learned a few tricks for mapping my brows. I’d never really used a brow pencil regularly, so a few days after the event I bought the NYX Precision Brow Pencil. I’ve been using it to fill out my brows. I really like the way they look. Plus, the tips I learned are great for when I wax my brows too! The lady that taught me the brow mapping techniques worked for Benefit. This article from Elle was also written by someone from Benefit, so all of these techniques are the ones I learned and use!

Peppermint Mochas from Starbucks were my gateway into coffee and they will forever be my favorite espresso drink. I’m usually a black coffee drinker, but I honestly don’t like Starbucks coffee. Which means when I go to Starbucks, I get a mocha. I try not to go to too frequently, but in December I treat myself to one at least once, if not twice, a week. It just feels festive to be drinking one, especially when they have their holiday cups out.

I have a love/hate relationship with lipstick. I’ve always bought less expensive lipstick and I get so frustrated that it comes off on everything. I’m a burgers and tacos kinda girl, so I’d end up with red lip prints on my burger buns. I recently bought some more expensive lipstick in a mini pack, just to see if it would be worth the investment. Then I was talking to one of my friends who is super into makeup and she recommended the Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink. She said it was very similar to the Kat Von Dee lipstick I was using, but more affordable and better. I asked Santa for some in my stocking and I’m already obsessed! I’ve worn it out for tacos, burgers, cocktails and it doesn’t come off. I can even go all day without retouching it! The color fades a bit as the day goes on, but it lasts all day. It doesn’t dry my lips out like a lot of other matte lipsticks. It actually feels fairly tacky for most of the day, which surprises me since it stays put so well. And it’s only $8! I’m definitely getting a ton more colors!

A few weeks ago my favorite podcaster, Miranda of Live Free Creative, did an episode on block scheduling. She went into detail about how she block schedules out her day and how it helps her stay focused, on task and accomplish her goals. She also talked about how it helps her to relax and be more present during family time and with her self-care. I decided to give it a try for myself and it has been awesome! I don’t schedule out every single day (yet) but the days I do schedule I feel more accomplished and fulfilled. An example of one of my schedules from this month looked like this:

  • 6 – 9 am: Wake up, check emails, write blog posts, schedule Insta post, breakfast, girls and myself dressed, clean kitchen
  • 9:30 – 11: Christmas decorating
  • 11 – 1: Play and lunch
  • 1 – 2: Naps, take blog post photos
  • 2 – 3: “School” for Mara
  • 3 – 7: Family time, dinner, baths, bedtime routine
  • 7:30 – 8:30: Paint mantle back drop, craft video
  • 8:30 – 10pm: Christmas movie and work on J’s stocking

These schedules are loose enough to give me wiggle room in my day, but act as a great guide to staying focused and on task. Any specific tasks that I don’t accomplish during the set time frame go on the schedule for the next day, or later in the week. I know it may seem odd to schedule out play time with the girls, but on a regular day when I’m in the living room with them I get continually distracted by all of the other things I could or should also be doing. This scheduled time helps me to be present and know that those other tasks have their own time. I’m more calm and present for a good chunk of time, versus being distracted and frazzled the whole day. And it’s not like I ignore them the rest of the time, I’m just not sitting on the floor 100% engaged like I am during the set aside play times.

TikTok

I’m not sure if I’m allowed to like TikTok since it’s mostly teenagers on the platform, but I’m hooked. It’s a good way to lose 30 minutes of your life, just watching videos. It makes me feel a little old sometimes, but I’m mostly following celebrities and a few DIYers so my feed isn’t as full of teenagers doing dance challenges. It’s just fun. Nothing is sponsored or overly professional.
