Ingredients for Chicken Crack Dip

  • Chicken – Use shredded chicken or finely chopped chicken breasts for this dip. Leftover chicken is ideal because it doesn’t require as much prep work. Shredded rotisserie chicken from the grocery store is perfect. Canned chicken is also a great alternative if you don’t have time to shred chicken.
  • Cream Cheese – Softened cream cheese is ideal because it is easier to stir. Prewhipped cream cheese is a great alternative as well.
  • Sour Cream – Thin the dip a bit with full-fat sour cream. It adds a delicious tangy flavor and makes the creamy base better for dipping with chips. Substitute with Greek yogurt if you prefer.
  • Ranch Seasoning – Use a packet of Ranch seasoning or make homemade Ranch seasoning. Ranch dressing mix contains onion powder, dill, parsley, garlic powder, dried chives, celery salt, and dried buttermilk powder. Hidden Valley Ranch is my favorite.
  • Bacon – Prepare a pack of bacon until it is crispy. Chop the cooked bacon into small pieces. You may substitute with prepackaged bacon bits, but fresh bacon tastes better.
  • Shredded Cheese – Shredded cheddar cheese is best for this recipe. Use both medium cheddar and sharp white cheddar cheese for the most flavor.
  • Green Onions – Chop fresh green onions into thin pieces to mix into the dip and garnish the top.

How to Make Chicken Crack Dip

This easy Chicken Crack Dip is warm, cheesy, and delicious. It’s the perfect dip for any party or tailgate celebration.

Step One – Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step Two – First, combine room-temperature cream cheese and sour cream in a large mixing bowl. Mix by hand or use an electric hand mixer.

Step Three – Then, stir in the ranch seasoning by hand using a rubber spatula or spoon. Mix the seasoning thoroughly to avoid any dry pockets.

Step Four – Next, add the chicken to the bowl and stir to combine it with the cream cheese mixture. Then add three-quarters of the shredded cheese. Set aside the remaining cheese to top the dip before baking.

Step Five – After the cheese is thoroughly mixed into the dip, add most of the bacon and green onions. Set aside about 2 tablespoons of chopped bacon and green onion as toppings.

Step Six – Transfer the uncooked chicken cheese dip to a baking dish and top with the remaining cheese. Bake uncovered for 20 minutes.

Step Seven – Remove the baked Chicken Crack Dip from the oven and top with the remaining bacon and green onions.

Make It In the Crock Pot!

If you want to skip turning on the oven, make this Chicken Crack Dip in the crock pot instead! Follow the directions above, but combine the ingredients directly in the crock pot. Instead of baking the dip, heat it in the crock pot on low for 1 – 2 hours. Stir the dip every 30 minutes to ensure the cheese melts evenly. Serve the dip directly in the crock pot on warm to ensure every bite is hot and delicious!

The biggest difference is that the dip won’t have the thick, crusty layer of melted cheese on top. But it will stay hot for much longer!

How to Store This Dip

This dip is best served hot, so I recommend serving it immediately. If you’re pressed for time and need to make it in advance you can. Just keep in mind the flavors may change when reheated.

Store leftover Chicken Crack Dip in the refrigerator in an airtight container for 2-3 days. Leftovers don’t typically keep for longer than 2-3 days.

Reheat in a microwave-safe bowl for 2 minutes, or until the dip is heated through. For the best flavor, reheat the dip in a baking dish in the oven at 350 degrees for 10 minutes.
