What is a Sour?

A sour is a famous cocktail that contains lemon or lime juice, liquor, and a sweetener. The name “sour” comes from the tart lemon juice. Sours are often made with whiskey, gin, or vodka. But any liquor can be used for a sour cocktail.

This sour recipe contains moonshine as the base cocktail. For this recipe, the moonshine is blackberry flavored. But you could use an unflavored moonshine as well.

Where Can I Find a Moonshine Sour at EPCOT?

The Moonshine Sour is available at the American Adventure pavilion’s outdoor Regal Eagle Smokehouse bar. It is only available at the outside bar, not inside the restaurant. According to the menu posted outside of the bar, this cocktail contains Ole Smokey Blackberry Moonshine. Ole Smokey is the brand of moonshine used in other EPCOT cocktails as well.

If you’re “Drinking Around the World” at EPCOT, I recommend this cocktail. And if you’re not at EPCOT, you can try the drink at home!

Ingredients Needed for a Moonshine Sour

Blackberries – Muddled fresh blackberries are best for this cocktail. But thawed frozen blackberries are a great alternative.

Blackberry Moonshine – The Regal Eagle Smokehouse uses Ole Smokey Blackberry Moonshine. That is also the moonshine I use at home. However, any brand of blackberry moonshine works for this recipe!

Blood Orange Juice – Blood oranges are available at most grocery stores. Use a juicer to extract the juice. Or purchase a bottled version of juice. The Fresh Market sells pre-bottled blood orange juice that is delicious.

Blood Orange Syrup – The blood orange syrup contributes additional sweetness to the cocktail. Try Monin’s Blood Orange Syrup. Or substitute simple syrup.

Lemon Juice – Fresh lemon juice is best for a sour cocktail. It has a brighter, more tart flavor than bottled juice.

First, muddle half a cup of blackberries in the bottom of a cocktail shaker. Wash the blackberries beforehand. Then, add fresh lemon juice. Use a citrus squeezer to extract the juice.

Next, add the blackberry moonshine, blood orange juice, and blood orange syrup. Add a handful of ice to the shaker. Shake until the ingredients are well combined.

Can I Make This Cocktail Ahead of Time?

Yes! Muddle the blackberries and strain out the juice. Then combine the blackberry juice with the moonshine, blood orange juice, syrup, and lemon juice. Store the cocktail in the refrigerator without ice for up to 24 hours.

Shake, or stir, the cocktail before serving. Serve over ice and garnish as usual.
