Animated Mother’s Day Movies

Turning Red

A beautiful story about the relationship between a mother and daughter navigating the pre-teen years and puberty. On the outside Mei is a dutiful daughter who helps her family at home and does her chores. But she keeps her interests and crushes on boys a secret from her overprotective mother. Her anxiety over balancing her duties and her changing interests results in Mei turning into a big red panda. Mei learns her family history is full of other red pandas and the love of a mother and her daughter is the key to stopping the transformation. This is one of the best movies for Mother’s Day!

Another great movie about the struggles between mothers and daughters. Merida and her mother, Queen Elinor, don’t agree on anything. Elinor wants Merida to grow up and do her duty as princess to their kingdom, but Merida is more interested in following her own path. When Elinor tells Merida she must marry, Merida runs away. She makes a wish to change her mother’s mind, but it turns her mother into a bear instead. Merida and her mother must learn to work together to reverse the spell before the kingdom hunts down Elinor.

The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea

Ariel gets a little taste of what it’s like to parent a version of herself in this epic sequel. Ariel and Eric have a beautiful daughter named Melody. They’ve raised Melody on land, but the young girl dreams of a life under the sea. She sneaks away and ends up in danger from her grandfather’s enemies. Now Ariel must return to the sea to save her daughter and her father.

The Aristocrats

This Disney classic movie is the story of a mother far from home with her children on a journey to return home. A mother cat, Duchess, and her three kittens are stolen from their home in Paris. They are abandoned in the countryside, so Duchess teams up with an alley cat named O’Malley to get her kittens back home.

Peter Pan: Return to Neverland

Wendy is all grown up with children of her own. She tells them stories of Peter Pan at night, but her daughter Jane doesn’t believe in them. One night, Captain Hook kidnaps Jane to use her as bait to capture Peter. The Lost Boys, Tinkerbell, and Peter rescue her, but Jane refuses to believe in magic. Without faith in magic, Jane cannot fly and cannot return home.

Incredibles 2

This movie is an excellent portrayal of the struggles of working mothers, and the invisible labor of a mother in the home. Helen Parr, aka Mrs. Incredible, is offered a job as the face of a new campaign to make superheroes beloved again. Her return to work leaves her husband Bob Parr at home managing the house and looking after the children.

A lovely story about generational trauma passed down from the matriarch of an enchanted family. The Madrigal family lives in a magical casita and each family member has a magical gift, except Mirabel. Without magic, Mirabel feels like an outsider from her family and struggles to earn her Abuela’s approval. When the family’s magic is threatened she is determined to save it and her family.

Live Action Mother’s Day Movies on Disney Plus

Freaky Friday

This is one of the best Mother’s Day movies on Disney Plus. It’s about a teenage daughter, Anna, and her mother, Tess, who constantly fight and argue. One morning they wake up to realize that they’ve switched bodies. Now Tess must attend Anna’s high school to relearn what it’s like to be a teenager. Meanwhile, Anna faces all of the stresses of being an adult and a parent. The two come to understand and respect each other more deeply. This movie stars Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis. And I hear a sequel may be coming!

The Parent Trap

This movie is geared more toward parenting in general, but it’s still perfect for Mother’s Day. Annie and Haley are twins who were separated as babies when their parents split up. Haley moved to Napa, California with their father and Annie moved to London with their mother. The two girls meet for the first time at a summer camp on the East Coast. They switch places and scheme to reunite their estranged parents. Lindsay Lohan plays both twins and Emma Thompson stars as their mother. (The Classic Films of Freaky Friday and Parent Trap are also on Disney Plus).

You Again

A comedy about relationships between women and how we carry our teenage insecurities into adulthood. Marnie learns that her brother is marrying her high school nemesis. Marnie’s mother also realizes that the bride’s aunt is her old nemesis as well. Now mother and daughter are on a mission to reveal the evilness of their former bullies. This film has an all-star cast, including Kristen Bell, Sigourney Weaver, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Betty White.

The Princess Diaries

Mia Thermopolis’ mother is one of my favorite characters in this movie. It’s a beautiful portrayal of a great mother-daughter bond and a budding grandmother-grandaughter relationship. Following the death of her estranged father, Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway) learns she is a princess and heir to the throne of Genovia. Her grandmother (Julie Andrews) moves to the Genovian consulate to train Mia in the royal ways. The two form a relationship as Mia grows into her new role.

Ice Princess

There are a lot of movies about mothers and their teenage daughters! In Ice Princess, Casey plans to attend Harvard like her mother. She has the grades, but her secret passion is figure skating. Her mother doesn’t understand and views skating as a distraction. She finds an unlikely coach in her nemesis’ mother. They create a training plan that uses her intellect to help her succeed as a skater.

A fairy godmother-in-training reads a letter from a 10-year-old girl named Mackenzie and sets off on a journey to help her. Instead, she discovers Mackenzie is now a miserable 40-year-old single mother. The fairy godmother wants to help Mackenzie find her true love, but both discover there are different kinds of true love and happily ever afters.

Giselle (Amy Adams) struggles with her stepdaughter Morgan as they move to a new town. She feels desperate and makes a wish to improve their relationship. Instead, Gisselle becomes the evil stepmother of her nightmares. Morgan must find a way to break the spell and save her beloved mother. This is the perfect choice for families with loving stepparents who are real parents!

Into the Woods

A baker and his wife (Emily Blunt) venture into the forest to find ingredients to reverse a spell for a witch (Meryl Streep). In return, she will help them have a child. During their journey, they meet Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Jack. Everyone is on a quest to fulfill a wish. The whole premise of this musical is that the baker and his wife want to become parents.

Sound of Music

Maria (Julie Andrews) is a nun living in Austria. The convent sends her to be the nanny for the Von Trapp family. Maria forms an attachment to the children and marries their father, becoming a loving mother. The family travels Austria performing until they must flee the Nazi invasion. This musical movie is inspired by the true story of the Von Trapp Family singers.

Dumbo (Live Action and Animated)

Dumbo has a loving mother who loves him. She is restrained for trying to help her baby after he is treated harshly by others in the circus. The song “Baby Mine” will never not make me cry.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil

Maleficent is Aurora’s mother figure preparing for her daughter to marry. She discovers that Aurora’s soon-to-be mother-in-law wants to destroy all fairies, so Maleficent must stop her.

Marvel Movies to Watch with Mom

When people think of Mother’s Day movies, they don’t think of superhero movies. However, Disney Plus has a few great Marvel movies that highlight the importance and strength of mothers.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

This movie is mostly about Shuri grappling with the unexpected death of her brother. However, it is also about Queen Ramonda, a mother navigating the world after losing a child. She must rule, comfort her daughter, and grapple with her grief. There’s a reason why Angela Bassett was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award nomination for this role. It’s an excellent choice of Mother’s Day movies on Disney Plus.

The Marvels

The stars of this movie are Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers), Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan), and Photon (Monica Rambeau). It is mostly about their relationship with each other, but Monica’s mother and Kamala’s mother play key roles in the story’s progression. Monica grapples with the loss of her mother and Carol’s absence from her life. Kamala’s mother is a fierce protector who isn’t intimated by anyone who threatens her family.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Everything about Shang-Chi’s current life hinges on the death of his mother when he was a child. She was a strong and calm presence who brought out the best in those around her. Losing his mother’s love turned his father back into a villain and estranged her children from each other.
