BBQ Chicken Dip Recipe

A tangy and delicious BBQ chicken dip that tastes just like a BBQ sandwich. This dip is best served with toasted bread and coleslaw!

Homemade BBQ always seems a little intimidating. The flavors need to be just right. The meat is best smoked. And it should take all day to cook.

Why not skip all of that? Create a simple dip, that tastes just like a BBQ sandwich. Without the stress!

How to Make BBQ Chicken Dip

The most challenging part of making BBQ chicken dip is cooking the chicken. The chicken can either be boiled or baked and then shredded.

Personally, I prefer baked chicken because I can season it with salt, pepper, and garlic. The spices infuse the chicken with more flavoring than boiling.

After the chicken is cooked, add it to a baking dish with about 4 ounces of cream cheese. Heat for about 10 minutes.

Use Leftovers For An Easier Dip

Make this dip even more simple by using leftover rotisserie chicken! Simply shred up the leftovers and heat them in the oven with cream cheese.

After the cream cheese melts, mix it with the chicken until it’s thoroughly coated. Then add an entire bottle of your favorite BBQ sauce.

My personal favorite is Sweet Baby Ray’s. But the Private Selection Kansas City or Carolina Inspired sauces are also delicious.

Pop the BBQ chicken dip back in the oven for another 10 minutes.

Can’t have BBQ Without Coleslaw

Serve the dip topped with coleslaw! Personally, BBQ sandwiches require coleslaw. This means, BBQ chicken dip also requires it!

Add the coleslaw at the last minute. Otherwise the liquid pools in the dip. That’s not very appetizing.

Other BBQ Chicken Dip Toppings

Other excellent topping ideas for this BBQ chicken dip include cheddar cheese, bacon, pickled red onions, or pickles.

Pickled onions or pickles may seem like an odd topping. But the vinegar and crunch are excellent pairings for barbeque. A local BBQ place that we love serves everything with a side of pickles. And now I’m addicted to the combination.

What to Serve With BBQ Chicken Dip

This saucy dip pairs well with a variety of hearty chips. Try thick tortilla chips or Frito’s for some crunch.

Or serve it with slices of toasted baguette. The bread makes an open-face barbeque mini sandwich. Plus, the crusty outside still provides some crunch. And it holds more dip!

Try Crockpot BBQ Chicken Dip to Make It Even Easier

I made my dip in the oven. But to make it even more hassle-free, use a slow cooker. Either cook your chicken in the slow cooker, shred it, and add the remaining ingredients. Or add pre-cooked chicken, cream cheese, and the sauce all at once.

If you use a crockpot, serve the toppings on the side! Coleslaw doesn’t taste as yummy served warm.

How Long Does It Last in the Fridge?

Store any leftover BBQ dip in a sealed container in the refrigerator for no more than 24 hours. After a day, the sauce becomes soupy. That just makes the dip unappetizing.

Also, don’t store the dip with coleslaw mixed in. The coleslaw excretes a lot of water. It will be BBQ soup within a few hours.
