First let me say that hanging these curtains has turned into quite the fiasco. It turns out that the screws that I was using (from the previous owners curtain rods) were too short and I was actually drilling in the right spot, just not deep enough to go into the stud. I got one rod up in the master bedroom, but haven’t pressed or hemmed the curtains. I’ll have a full reveal for you guys on Monday though, I promise. I would say tomorrow, but I’ve got too much going on tonight to finish them by then.
Ok and now onto the real point of this post! Exactly a month ago, I wrote this post where I shared with you all some health goals I made for myself for this spring/summer and beyond. Here were my goals:
- Cut out all meat 1 day a week.
- Keep the drinking and eating out for the weekend, or hanging out with friends. This is kind of what we do now, but I occasionally go out for lunch and I always want to go to dinner. No more.
- Exercise (cardio) at least 3 days a week and stretch/do yoga everyday. The stretching and yoga is supposed to help with my sciatica.
- Tone what I’ve got. Not looking to lose weight necessarily, just to tone what I’ve got and carry it better.
- Run a 10k with my husband.
I’m happy to report that I’ve stuck with most of these goals for the whole month!
- We cut out red meat and chicken 1 day every week, we will eat shrimp in pasta if our meatless day falls on the same day as we run because if not we are starving in a few hours.
- I haven’t been as good about the eating out. I’ve only had fast food 3 times since Easter (the end of Lent) but I’m still buying sushi or Lean Cuisines at least once a week. My caffeine intake is still pretty high too, but my best friend and I are trying to cut back, starting on Monday.
- I haven’t been so good on the exercise front until recently. I started doing the Couch to 5k program and am almost done with Week 2! I signed up to run a 5k in May so I know I’ll be sticking with it until then because I paid to be in the 5k. Nothing to whip you into shape like the fear of losing money!
I always stretch after running, but I need to work on doing it on a daily basis. - I think the toning ties in with the exercise and yoga, so I’m working on it, but it needs more work. I’ve heard good things about the Jillian Michaels DVDs, so maybe I’ll give those a try.
- And of course the 5k is my first step in the direction of running a 10k. I’m really hoping that I get super addicted to running and run several 5ks and 10ks in the future.
So cue that Rocky theme song, because I’m feeling on top of the world! Running makes me feel super accomplished and I just love being able to say that “I went running yesterday”
You go girl! You have accomplished so much and the way you are feeling makes it worth it. I am also doing C25K (using this 5K iphone app) and it’s hard, but I love the feelings afterwards. Woo hoo for you!
Getting started is the hardest part when you’re trying to eat right and work out, at least it is for me, so it looks like you’re on the right path! I love that you made specific goals for yourself instead of just the general “eat better and exercise”. I think you may have inspired me to make my own goals and put them out there for all to see. Great accountability!
Woohoo!
I’ve heard of the Couch to 5K program and it still sort of terrifies me. My exercise is sprinting to the train and then from the subway to the ferry and then to another train. I wish my commute wasn’t so long because then I would sign up for yoga & pilates!
Yay!! Keep up the good work! It is so satisfying when you find something that works.
And I have one of the Jillian Michaels DVDs (30 Day Shred) and I love it! It gets a little boring to do it every day but if you use it a few times a week and mix it in with other stuff, it’s great. It really kicks my butt
Yay! Sticking with goals is much harder than you’d think, so it’s great that you’re doing so well!
I too am doing to the C25K and I’ve now done 2 days from week 4 (and I fear I may have to repeat because I just don’t feel ready to run 2 miles straight next Friday…eek). I’ve never been what anyone would consider a “runner” but this program makes me feel like I could be. Stick with it and you’ll be running a 10k in no time. The great thing too is that they have a 10k training program for after you finish the 5k.

I love how putting goals in writing on my blog for everyone to see helps me to achieve those goals. There’s nothing quite like knowing that you’ll have to own up to failure publicly to push me to move forward. Congrats on doing so well with achieving your goals! I’m running a 5K in May, too. And having already registered and paid for it means that I really have to keep running, too. Thanks for sharing.
Good for you!!
Lately I have been walking with a friend of mine but I also like the Just Dance and Zumba Wii games. Working out has to be fun for me. I do have to pull all the curtains in the house though so my neighbors want see me.
Reaching multiple goals at one time is tough, and I think you are doing great! Baby steps, and you’ll get there!!
Me and my hubby started our 5AM gym routine again about a month and a half ago. It’s so hard some days, but the feeling during and after is worth it. Exercising is totally addicting!
Way to go Ashley! You’re doing great so far, keep it up! I’ve been a bit slack with the good eating habits lately, but one thing I’ve tried to do is cut back on red meat. One week, I think I ate it for dinner 6 out of 7 days. Then I went 2 weeks with eating it only once or twice. Cutting back really seemed to make a difference.
Fingers crossed that your sciatica goes away soon. I’ve had before, and I’ve had a neural problem since October that feels a lot like it – not fun.
I bet it won’t be long till you and your husband are running 10K (or more!) together
Way to go! I need to update where I am on my goals, too!
I hadn’t heard about the couch to 5K program… I need to look that up!
Way to go!! If you get addicted to running let me know – I WANT to get addicted to running, but can’t seem to get past the “I hate it” part!
i did the couch to 5K program this past Fall and really liked it! i am not a runner at all and it actually got me up to running a 5k
. good luck!
Way to be! I’m currently addicted to Jillian’s Ripped in 30. Never thought I’d look forward to doing it! Keep it up!!!
That’s awesome! Looks like we’re both getting on the healthy-living train lol. I have the Jillian Micheals “No More Trouble Zones” DVD and I definitely recommend it – I bought it because it had great reviews, and it’s definitely an intense program that works out every inch of your body! We just got an elliptical, so I’m super excite to start using that – I’ve always preferred them to running, so I think I’ll be able to stick with it!
Go you! I really need to start liking fish and do your no meat at least once a week thing. I love sushi but cooked fish is so unpleasant to me.
That’s awesome! I have so many excuses for not working out and eating better, but I reallyreallyreally need to work on it. Maybe I’ll look at the Couch 2 5k just for the fitness/cardio. I really don’t see myself ever wanting to run a 5k (or any k!).
