If you follow me on Instagram, then you probably saw that I went on a fun weekend trip with my best friends a few months ago. (This was literally 3 days before I got pregnant, which is why it’s taken me so long to share!) We all met in college by some bizarre twists of fate, some of us were roommates, others classmates and we somehow all ended up in a bible study together. We all live in different parts of the east coast, but we usually get together every few years when someone gets married. This year no one got married, but we all got together. Which let me tell you, is 100% better than a wedding reunion. We didn’t have anywhere to be and zero responsibilities. Just us having fun, celebrating a birthday and our 10 years of friendship.
Our trip started on Saturday morning with a trip to pick up my friend Terri from the airport. My college roomie Linds (whose birthday we were celebrating) rode with me. Then, the three of us drove out to Charlottesville to meet up with 4 more of our friends for a day of wine, cider and beer. We started with wine at Veritas Vineyard & Winery (my fave stop of the trip) for a tasting. Our tasting included 4 whites (Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Viognier and a table white called White Star) and 3 reds (Cabernet Franc, Merlot and their table red called Red Star). I’m usually just a red wine drinker, but I did really like the Viognier and the table white. They were light and crisp and too overtly sweet. My favorite was the Cabernet Franc though. It’s a very light red which makes it perfect for day drinking. Me and the other wine drinkers in our group enjoyed a glass or two as we chatted and caught up on life. The great thing about these ladies is that no matter how much time has passed, we can always pick right back up where we left off and it’s like no time has passed at all.
The next stop for our trip was about 20 minutes down the road at Bold Rock Hard Cider. Linds (the birthday girl) is a huge cider fan so this spot was a must. Some of the girls had flights and we sat outside and enjoyed some live music and some amazing views. We seriously could not have asked for a more beautiful day. Bold Rock has two different flight options available, plus you can order pints and food. I’m not usually a big fan of cider, but I did sample some of my friends’ flights. Their Seasonal Cider was made with Blood Orange and was to DIE for. I would have had a pint if I hadn’t been sobering up to drive to the next spot.
Our next, and last Charlottesville stop, was about 2 miles away at Devil’s Backbone Brewing Company. We decided to grab a table inside their restaurant to have some snacks and beers. I ordered some wings and a flight. I didn’t touch the IPA in the flight because I’m not a fan, but the Vienna Lager, Striped Bass Pale Ale and Trail Angel Weiss were delicious. Their food was absolutely delicious! Some of the girls ordered nachos and sandwiches and we all munched and shared. After our snacks and beers we headed back to Richmond for dinner and to check into our hotel.
We booked the family suite at the Graduate Hotel. The suite slept our whole group comfortably with it’s two bathrooms, King bed, bunk beds and sleeper sofa. Graduate Hotel is a brand new hotel in Richmond that features clean, modern design and has a cafe in the lobby and a rooftop pool and bar (opening soon). We checked in and freshened up when we got back from Charlottesville and then Ubered to dinner. We had dinner at En Su Boca, a great little margarita and taco spot. It’s the birthday girl’s favorite restaurant so it was a must spot to visit. After dinner we headed back to the hotel and crashed. We’re definitely all getting older since we couldn’t stay up past midnight. On top of that we were all up before 9am. Getting old is weird.
We started our morning off with coffee from the adorable coffee shop, Brookfield, downstairs, then we went up to rooftop to enjoy the views (we didn’t make it up the night before). Then it was time to checkout and head to brunch. We had brunch and mimosas then headed to my house. Not all of my friends had met Mara (I was pregnant the last time we were all together!) so they wanted to come see her. Plus, I was a little anxious to get home. This was my first overnight trip without her and I missed her. Though it was a wonderful and much needed time away! It was nice that she was at home with Jesse. He stays with her so I can go out with friends all the time, so I had full confidence that she was well taken care of. I know not everyone gets those opportunities, but if you do TAKE IT! Your husband can handle it and you need a break with friends Mama!
A few short weeks after this trip I found out that I was pregnant with Baby #2, so I am even more thankful for the amazing time away with my best friends! Also thankful that we didn’t start trying for Baby #2 before the trip so I could fully enjoy the wine and other drinks (and no morning sickness!) If there isn’t another wedding before then, we are hoping to get together again in 2019 to do some sort of large 30th birthday bash for all of us turning 30 (including me!). I’d like to do a beach trip or something. I will definitely be over due for a break. 😉 Happy Friday!
This post isn’t sponsored. I just figured it was worth posting a few months later because we drank, ate and stayed at some great places and if you are planning a Charlottesville or Richmond trip you should totally check them out!
